Research interests & activities

I am member of the Algorithms, Bioinformatics and Complexity Research Group (ALBCOM) of the Dept. Llenguatges i Sistemes Informàtics (LSI). I am the leading researcher of the projects Algorithm Engineering and Experimentation (ALINEX), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology, from 2006 to 2009.

My current research areas of interest are:

I am member of the ACM.

Publications

Besides my Ph.D. students, I have coauthored papers with many other good friends around the world: M. Archibald, R. Baeza-Yates, R. Cases, J. Daligault, J. Díaz, V. Estivill-Castro, Ph. Flajolet, J. Gabarró, X. Gourdon, P. Kirschenhofer, X. Messeguer, L. Moura, D. Panario, A. Panholzer, H. Prodinger, B. Stevens, G. Valiente, and A. Viola.

My Erdös number is 3 (via D. Panario -> L. B. Richmond -> P. Erdös, also via Ph. Flajolet -> A. Odlyzko -> P. Erdös). My Knuth number is 2 (via Ph. Flajolet -> D. E. Knuth).

You can also access from here the Technical Reports Archive of the Department LSI and the ALCOM-FT Technical Reports Archive.

Postgraduate Studies

I'm member of the Postgraduate Studies Committee, which coordinates the two MSc programs and the two PhD programs of our department. Click here for information about our postgraduate programs. You can find additional information specific to the PhD programs here.

In particular, I'm in charge of the external refereeing of all PhD thesis defended in the two PhD programmes of the department and of the process for the designation of the jury for PhD defense. Please check the web pages of the department for further information about the administrative details or contact Mercè Juan (merce@lsi.upc.{edu,es}), the secretary of the postgraduate programmes.

Teaching

I am usually involved in courses at the School of Informatics (FIB) as well as graduate courses, like Mathematical Analysis of Algorithms. My current teaching activity is concentrated in the following courses:

Download from here the slides for the graduate course on Coding Theory given by Dr. A. Viola. The list of exercises (in Spanish) is here.

In May 2009, I've been giving a short course (6 hours), Analytic Combinatorics: A Primer at the Fields-MITACS Summer School in Applied Probability (Carleton U., Canada). Click here to get the slides of the course. Or you may prefer them as a handout with four slides per page.

For fun
